That way the tapered zerk thread has something to wedge up agianst. Otherwise the zerk will never tighten up. I worked in a machine shop where we installed a lot of zerks and never used anything but standard 1/4-28 taps on the zerks.

Before doing the chassis lube, pump a little grease out of the gun to clean out any dirt that may have gotten into it. Also clean off any dirt/grease on each zerk before attaching the grease gun fitting, so you don’t pump it into the joints.
