These new rules presented in the DMG, the Speed Factor Modifiers Initiative, are very interesting, because as playing D & D 2nd edition, I used them, but it can present some problems in the game session. In my play sessions, roll the initiative once at the beginning of the meeting and start the fight.

The player with the highest initiative roll goes first, followed by the player with the next highest roll, and so on. It’s meant to add some level of structure to combat encounters. Webb16 mars 2024 · You don't need to concentrate on Guidance after it's used (plus Initiative doesn't change in 5e). If a DM did that, she might expect lose the faith of her players in her rule knowledge. Initiative doesn’t change... because there are few ways to modify initiative temporarily, such as guidance.

Every character has an "Initiative Bonus"; at the start of combat everyone (including all the DM-controlled enemies) rolls a d20 and adds their initiative bonus; then everyone takes their actions in descending order of their rolls. Second, you can offer Inspiration before the player rolls; say “If you do this, you’ll get inspiration.”. The first option is probably the easiest not to mess up.

So to the extent you can get initiative done faster, so much the better, and I find that the default method works just fine in that regard.
